Why should Youth Consider a Career in Local Government?

Municipal Government is the level of government closest to the people. It is where you can truly make a difference and get to see the results of your work. You have the ability to become an advocate for the community. As someone who has worked in the Provincial Government, I am able to see the difference in the ability to make decisions around your own destiny without the layers of bureaucracy.

Given the diversity of services that local government can provide, you work with many different departments and many people with a vast skill set. As a result, you gain invaluable experience and knowledge in fields that you may not otherwise be exposed to. You get an appreciation of all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make a municipality run. All of this is great resume building.

A career in Local Government, gives you an opportunity to collaborate and work closely with other communities in the Province and learn first hand about best practices and innovative ways of doing things. The networking is invaluable, and I have met some great and unforgettable people.
