Certified Municipal Manager
What is Certification?
It has been a long and sometimes windy road, but AMANS is now ready to facilitate the certification of qualifying members. The process of developing a Certification Program for municipal administrators in Nova Scotia began in the Spring of 2000. Over the past three years many of our members have worked long and hard to bring this initiative to where it is today. The AMA Executive Committee is truly grateful to those who worked on this project. Their time, dedication and perseverance have made the Certification Program possible.
Members of the AMANS who apply for the designation of Certified Municipal Manager under the Certification Program are eligible for certification if they meet the following criteria.
A person shall meet the education requirements for certification if:
- he/she holds a National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration (NACLAA Level II)
- in those situations where an individual believes he/she has an equivalent or greater level of education than the criteria set out in a. or b. above, application may be made to the designated AMANS examination body which will, after thorough enquiry, determine the level of equivalency (whether full, partial or none at all) which may be granted to the applicant.
A person shall meet the experience requirements for certification if, in the opinion of the designated AMANS examination body, he/she has had 5 (five) years employment with a municipality or municipalities as a municipal manager.
Membership in AMA
A person shall meet the membership requirements for certification if he/she is a member in good standing of the AMANS.
Good Character and Reputation
A person shall meet the good character and reputation requirements for certification, if he/she agrees to adhere to the AMANS Code of Ethics.
If you wish to apply for certification please complete the certification application form and forward it with the necessary attachments and a cheque for $225 plus HST to: Janice Wentzell, Registrar, AMA Certification Program, Suite 1106, 1809 Barrington Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 3K8. The $225 is a one-time, non-refundable application fee. You should also be aware that once you have been certified there is a requirement to acquire a certain amount of professional development points on a bi-annual basis. The purpose of the mandatory professional development requirement is to encourage CMMs to continue to be involved in the Association and to emphasize the importance of “life-long learning”. The Mandatory Professional Development Requirement is outlined in the Certification Report Version 1.3 which is posted on this website.
Please note that the Certification Program is strictly voluntary. Some members may choose, for a variety of reasons, not to seek a professional designation. Both non-certified and certified members will share the same AMA membership benefits.
