Job Description Project

On March 17, 2008, SNSRM, MFC, UNSM, AMANS and the School of Public Administration at Dalhousie University signed an MOU to reinstate a municipal stream into the MPA Program. One of AMA's responsibilities under this agreement is to encourage municipalities to engage the services of an MPA summer student for particular municipal projects. This summer, the AMA and UNSM hired Erika Bates to work on a variety of projects. One of the projects was to create a job description databank for members. A request was put forward to municipalities for their job descriptions and twenty municipalities participated. The job descriptions have been sorted in the following categories to provide context and comparability:

  • Villages
  • Towns Less than 2500
  • Towns 2500-10,000
  • Rurals Less than 10,000
  • Rurals 10,000-20,000
  • Rurals Greater than 20,000
  • Regional Municipalities

The categories are then further divided into major departmental areas such as Administration, Finance, Communications, IT, Planning and Development, Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Policing Services.

The job description databank is an ongoing project where job descriptions will continually be welcomed. It is highly encouraged that municipalities send in job descriptions in electronic format (no scanned documents please) when they have been updated in order to retain the usefulness of this tool.

If you have job descriptions you would like to contribute to the project, please send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

We hope this will be a valuable resource for municipalities!
